Hazardous Location Certifications

Challenges

Power supplies used in an explosive atmosphere may require hazardous location certification. Power supplies provide regulated voltages to drive motors, relays and power-electronic controls. As power supplies produce heat and contain high voltages and/or high currents, they need to be thoroughly tested to ensure sparks and high temperatures will not compromise system safety.

We have many supplies with a variety of hazardous location certifications. Power supplies with hazardous location certification make system designs easier to certify and ensure safety to the end user.

UL 508

Challenges

UL508 is the safety standard for industrial control equipment rated 1500V or less. Power supplies are thermally tested to ensure they will operate safely in enclosed cabinets or as stand-alones. Terminations to the products have to be designed to be field wired, often with bare wire connections.

Our Solutions

Our supplies with 508 certification are UL "listed" rather than "recognized". This allows the product to be used as a stand-alone device without the need to be fitted into an enclosure. In addition to our extensive DIN rail mount power supplies, many of our metal cased industrial products are UL 508 certified.

MIL-STD-810 E

Challenges

Sections of MIL-STD-810 cover vibration and shock. How the power supply is mounted can cause mechanical resonance in the system. When the entire system is subjected to shock and vibration, a power supply containing one or two supplies may start to vibrate at amplitudes greater than the system itself.

Our Solutions

Our ruggedized power supplies offer mechanical reinforcement, such as potting for power modules, with adhesive and additional mechanical support for larger components. These products are tested by independent companies to ensure compliance.

Long Life/Superior E-Caps

Challenges

Electrolytic capacitors are used extensively in power supplies but degrade with time and temperature. With every 10°C reduction, the lifetime of the cap doubles.

Unless care is taken to maximize capacitor life-time, power supplies will no longer meet their published specifications and cause system failures.

For example a capacitor has a stated life of 5,000 hours at 105°C case temperature (operating at maximum ripple current). At 85°C, the life increases to 20,000 hours (5,000 x 2 x 2 = 20,000).

Our Solutions

We measure all the electrolytic capacitors (e-caps) in our power supplies under the operating conditions for the end application. This is essential to estimate the life that can be expected from the power supply.

TDK-Lambda is acutely aware of the impact of capacitor wear-out and the effect it has on start-up, output ripple and AC hold-up times.

We can provide units which have thermocouples already attached and additionally, we can provide all data on e-caps used.
